Cultural Judaism, also known as Secular Humanistic Judaism, is a 150-year old movement. It grew from Eastern European Yiddish culture, freethought, and progressive social values and Western European enlightenment philosophy. It declares that Judaism is the creation of the Jewish people of all times and places, not a set of rules and beliefs.
There are Secular Humanistic Jewish groups in North and South America, Europe, Israel, the former Soviet Union and Australia. In the United States and Canada, the Congress of Secular Jewish Organizations is the voice of Cultural Jews.
Is this for you?
The Baltimore Jewish Cultural Chavurah welcomes people of all ages and circumstances, including single people, one-parent families, gay and lesbian Jews, and intermarrieds.
Secular Humanistic Jewish observances include music, readings and discussion, rather than prayer. We concentrate on the ethical and historical messages which unite and uplift us as human beings and as Jews.
